What is Peyronies Disease?

Peyronies disease affects 5% of men. Peyronies disease presents between the ages of 40-60 years of age and involves the growth of fibrous plaques (like scar tissue) on the soft tissue of the penis, causing pain, erectile dysfunction and abnormal curvature of the penis.

Signs & Symptoms of Peyronies Disease

Candidates of Peyronies Disease | Risk Factors

This disease is most commonly seen in Caucasian males above the age of 40, with A+ blood type, although it may also be seen in men as young as 18 years old. Other candidates may be at risk for hereditary reasons if their father or brother has the disorder.  Getting older is another risk factor for getting Peyronie’s disease, as older tissue can be injured more easily and be less prone to healing.

Risk Factors for Peyronie’s Disease

The Cause

The cause of Peyronie’s disease is unknown, although it is often linked to trauma or injury to the penis during intercourse, or rough sports. When an injury is caused, blood cells form during the healing process which builds up into scar tissue.

Treatment | Medications & Supplements

Although there is no single cure for this disease, there are a variety of effective treatments that can be used. Collagen clostirdium histolycticum (called Xiaflex) can help peyronie’s disease by breaking down excess collagen in the penis. More recently, anti inflammatory drugs have also been used.

If the deformity of the penis is severe enough, the doctor may suggest surgery; this could include surgery to shorten the unaffected side or lengthen the affected side.  To lengthen the penis, the doctor will make several small cuts in the scar tissue which allows the sheath to stretch out and the penis to straighten.  Skin is then grafted over the holes that have been cut.

It’s important to explain to your partner what Peyronie’s disease is and how it can affect your ability to have sex.  Talk about how you can continue to have sexual relations.  It may also be helpful to talk to a counselor who specializes in sexual matters and family relations.
