Musculoskeletal Deformities

Most often, musculoskeletal deformities result in bowlegged knees, knock knees, severely hunched posture, scoliosis (curvature of the spine) and feet turned inward.  For both of the knee deformities, they are usually not treated, unless surgery is needed for the person to walk properly.

Bowlegs – Bow legged knees are when the knees are not touching when someone is standing with their feet and ankles together. Oftentimes, bowlegs occur based off the folded position of the baby in the mother’s womb. Sometimes they straighten out as the baby learns to walk, or sometimes they will stay bow legged.

Knock Knees – Knock-knees are when knees touch, but ankles and feet do not and the legs turn inward.  While infants start out bowlegged in the womb, they can straighten out as they learn to walk, and even become knock kneed.  Other causes of knock kneed can come from bone infection of obesity.

Scoliosis – Scoliosis is when the spine takes on a C or S-shaped curve, often resulting during the teenage years when a child grows really quickly.  It can run in families, although girls are more likely to have it than boys.
