Specialists have used body mass index (BMI) for over 100 years as a standard for weight.  It is used to determine if someone falls into the general category of being underweight, normal weight or overweight. Health professionals, personal trainers and population studies involving obesity use BMI as a measure. The range can also indicate important information about certain health conditions they might be at more risk for. While BMI has its own limitations, it is an easy to use and simple standard for weight status. Calculating your BMI is easy as pulling out a scale and a calculator.

Interpreting BMI

Now that you know what BMI is, why not try it for yourself? In order to calculate your BMI, you need to divide your weight in kilograms by the square of your height in meters.

Use the table below to interpret the range of your result.

BMI Weight Status
>18.5 Underweight
18.5 – 24.9 Normal Weight
25.0 – 29.9 Overweight
30.0+ Obese

BMI Does Not Tell The Whole Story

Remember, body mass index does not differentiate between the weight that comes from body fat and the weight that comes from muscle. If you find that your BMI indicates that you are overweight or obese, it may not be related to excess fat. Athletes who have higher muscle weight can have an identical BMI to someone overweight or obese. While BMI is a simple way that generally provides accurate results, there is much more to consider in determining how healthy you are.
